Another round of Matildas madness is upon us. Football Australia has announced that it has won the hosting rights for the 2026 edition of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. The major event will be hosted in 2026 with 12 countries participating and it will take place across the host states of New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia. The news follows a mega-successful run as co-hosts of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, where Australia made it to the semi-finals but lost the third-place playoff to Sweden. The Women’s Asian Cup was previously held in Australia in 2006. Australia won the cup in the 2010 tournament in China and also made the finals in 2014 and 2018.
“We are profoundly honoured to host the 2026 edition of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup,” Football Australia CEO James Johnson said in a statement.
“This decision reflects the global football community’s confidence in our capability to deliver outstanding events. Following the resounding success of last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, we are eager to create another tournament that celebrates women’s football and inspires a new generation.”
The selection of New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia further promises to deliver $260 million in revenue and over 1,000 job opportunities.
The tournament dates and venues will be confirmed in the coming months. Head here for more information.
