Camping not only gives us a chance to sleep somewhere visually stunning in the wild, but it can also do wonders for our physical and mental health. It shows us the importance of simplicity, teaches us survival skills, and is meditative in nature (literally). One of the things we love most about living in Brisbane is how close the city is to South East Queensland’s vast forests and hinterland hideaways. Here are 11 camping spots worth setting up at in and near Brisbane.
1. Lake Moogerah
Lake Moogerah may be a perfect spot to relax by the fire in the winter as the evening alpenglow hits the Scenic Rim mountains. But it’s also a water lover’s playground during the warmer months. Jetskiing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding – you name it. Find a shady spot to set up camp at Lake Moogerah Caravan Park and spend your days on lake time.

2. Cylinder Beach
When it comes to summer, North Stradbroke Island is the place to be, spending quality time on the white-sand beaches, checking out local dining spots, and well, camping if you want to stay on the island but save on accommodation. And when we say beach camping, we mean that the Cylinder Beach sites are right on the water.

3. Habitat Noosa
Another coastal gem, Habitat Noosa is an eco camp nestled just north of the Sunshine Coast, with 65 acres of bushland and 500 metres of beachfront to enjoy. Soak up the sunshine with a canoe ride through the nearby everglades and then go for a cold one at the on-site eco brewery.

4. Maleny Ocean View
If you prefer to overlook the ocean instead of camp on it, then venture into the Sunshine Coast hinterland to find Maleny Ocean View camp. This hilltop gem offers views prime views from Coolum to Caloundra, with a firepit for good measure.
This camping spot is only accessible by a 4WD.

5. Mt Barney Lodge Camping
Mt Barney National Park is one of the best hiking destinations in South East Queensland, mainly due to its rugged peaks and mountainous views. Camp right under the towering Mt Barney at the local lodge. The campground has modern amenities like hot showers to rinse off at after a sweaty hike, as well as a toilet and washing up area.
Lower Portals is a great hike and swimming hole to trek to nearby. Or if you’re feeling up to the challenge, you can embark up Mt Barney itself during the cooler months.

6. Borumba Deer Park
If your idea of a good campout is lots of animals around as well as full facilities like showers, toilets and a kitchen, then Borumba Deer Park[/trackLink] is a choice spot, especially if you’ve got kids to occupy, who will love the giant playground onsite.
Located beside the gorgeous Yabba Creek in the Mary Valley, the property is home to deer, pigs and goats, which you can hand-feed, and it’s also pet-friendly, so you don’t have to leave your furry friends at home — they’ll just need to be kept on a leash.

7. Charlie Moreland Camping AreaLocated in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, right next to a lush creek you can swim in, Charlie Moreland Camping Area is must for the warmer months. Spend the day on the nearby trails and then cool off in Little Yabba Creek.

8. Platypus Hole
Seeing a platypus in the wild is super rare. But this could be your chance at Platypus Hole near Lamington National Park. The swimming hole in which the campsites drop off to are home to resident platypuses. And although there is one swimming hole the property owners ask you to not swim in so you don’t disturb the wildlife, there are a few just below where you can float and cool down at.

9. Cedar Grove Camping at Amamoor Creek
Travel north up to Gympie to find this epic camping spot on Amamoor Creek. Pitch a tent in the open eucalypt forest and take a stroll on long or short walk nearby.

10. Weefarm Brisbane River Camping
This is one for the 4WD campers who don’t want to travel too far from the city to get away for a night or two. Weefarm Brisbane River Camping is located near Fernvale and sits on a picturesque section of the Brisbane River. The waterfront campsites are perfect for a kayak or stand-up paddleboard in a relaxing setting.
Although it’s a 4WD only road to get to the campsite, you may walk it if you don’t drive one, but that’s only recommended if you can easily carry your camp gear.
