The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops has revealed, you guessed, the world’s top 100 coffee shops, and to no one’s surprise and everyone’s pride, Australia has no less than five cafés on the list! From tried-and-tested franchises to small independent spots, there are vibes and brews to suit everyone. And for even better news, three of them have locations in Brisbane, so you won’t have to travel far to get a quality caffeine fix!
Only Coffee Project
Coming in at number 4 worldwide, this minimalist espresso bar in Crows Nest is beloved for its purist approach to specialty coffee. Part of their success is their uncompromising focus on coffee, featuring a rotating selection of beans from world-class roasters like Market Lane and Sey Coffee, plus quality treats like cookies from Luke Avenue.
Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters
Crowned the best coffee shop in the world last year, this specialty roastery came in at an impressive number 5 this year. They offer a unique experience that allows customers to witness the meticulous attention to detail that goes into crafting their amazing brews. Thanks to their unique blends, cosy interiores and commitment to the spread of coffee culture, offering courses and workshops, Toby’s Estate stands a head above the rest.
Beta Coffee
Another NSW spot, this cosy nook has more quality brews than you’ll know what to do with, and inventive blends that’ll amaze your taste buds, plus they frequently have pop-ups and host community events, making it everything you want in a café!
Proud Mary Coffee
This Melbourne coffee shop keeps on burnin’ ahead of the competition, coming in at number 26 on the list! Founded by husband and wife Nolan and Shari Hirte, Proud Mary takes you on a veritable journey with their innovative and experimental blends, from Mild, to Curious to Wild and finally Deluxe, for those looking for a whole new coffee experience. Their warm brick façade is as welcoming as the delicious smells wafting from within, and their food is as much a point of pride as their brews are.
Coffee Anthology
Brisbane’s own Coffee Anthology made the top 30, standing proudly at number twenty nine. Known as much for their specialty coffee, which is widely regarded as one of the benchmarks for quality brews in Brisbane, as they are for their delicate pastries and indulgent dishes — their eggs benny are a standout — this chic café is a must!
Single O
Coming in at 53, Single O also has a shop in Brisbane! This specialty coffee shop’s ethos is to “taste the single origin rainbow”, so they have exquisite flavours spanning everywhere from Chiapas to Ethiopia. They also participate in community-focused and sustainable initiatives such as Giving A Puck, a large-scale coffee grounds upcycling program.
Vacation Coffee
Yet another Melbourne café just made the list, this one at number 100, and it’s no wonder Vacation Coffee is among the best! Their interior’s soft colours and retro-modern design is like a mini getaway, and if you’re sipping on one of their amazing brews or creative specialty drinks and munching on a crispy toastie, all the better!
