Thinking about going overseas? Well, you can feel confident in your travels, because Australia has one of the most powerful passports in the world. The Henley Passport Index, the original and authoritative ranking of the world’s passports, has released their rankings for 2025. It assesses the number of destinations that can be accessed without a prior visa. It takes data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and includes 199 different passports to 227 travel destinations.
Despite a price hike implemented at the beginning of this year — with an adult passport for 10 years going from $398 to $412 — we dropped one place in the rankings, down from 6th to 7th place, which means we have access to 185 destinations. Joining us in 7th place are our friends from Czechia, Hungary, Malta and Poland.
Japan managed to hold on to its second place, having lost the top spot last year, and is now tied with South Korea. The coveted number one spot goes to Singapore, which has visa-free access to 193 destinations. New Zealand stayed stable at its place in number 5, and is joined by Greece and Switzerland.
The top 10 countries are:
- Singapore (193)
- Japan, South Korea (190)
- Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain (189)
- Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden (188)
- Greece, New Zealand, Switzerland (187)
- United Kingdom (186)
- Australia, Czechia, Hungary, Malta, Poland (185)
- Canada, Estonia, United Arab Emirates (184)
- Croatia, Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia Hungary (183)
- Iceland, Lithuania, United States (182)
The least powerful passports were Iraq, with access to 30 places, Syria, with access to 27 places, and Afghanistan, in 99th place, and access to only 25 destinations.
