Established way back in 1968, the Brisbane Tramway Museum Society has been preserving historical trams since, but it wasn’t until 1980 that the charming museum showcasing these picturesque vehicles opened at Ferny Grove.
The museum has over 20 trams, most of which operated on the Brisbane tram network and dating as far back as 1901, as well as two single-deck Brisbane trolley-buses. It also houses an extensive photographic collection of Brisbane’s tramway, tickets and uniforms worn by the tramway staff, two depot buildings recovered from the former Ipswich Road tram depot, a substation built from equipment from former Brisbane substations, an elevated signal cabin, and more.
But the highlight of the collection is their demonstration track, on which a selection of trams operate every Sunday afternoon — barring bad weather — offering rides to train enthusiasts young and not-so-young.

Thanks to its lovely outdoor location, you can enjoy the grounds and even picnic there as you take in the history and learn fun facts from the dedicated volunteers running the museum. The demonstration trams all still have working bells and countless stories, and some even have vintage ads above the seats, completing the illusion and truly transporting you to a bygone era.
There has never been a better time to go on this journey than on Sunday, September 28. In honour of the 63rd anniversary of the Paddington Tram Depot fire, in which 65 trams were lost, from 3pm to 7pm, for only $10 per child and $20 per adult (or $50 per family of four), you’ll get unlimited tram rides from up to seven of their working trams, ranging from 1901 to 1964.
Best of all, you’ll get to watch local gym teams battle it against the clock to see who can pull the horse tram over a 50-metre track in the quickest time. You won’t want to miss this stunning showcase of competition and athleticism!
And, if the mere idea of pulling a tram exhausts you, don’t worry: there will be sausage sizzle, donuts, ice cream, drinks and a coffee wagon available to refuel you!
