Making its California debut in 1996, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. was — and remains to this day — the first and only casual restaurant chain based on a motion picture property. We’re talking, of course, about the 1994 Academy Award-winning film, Forrest Gump.
Inspired by Tom Hanks’ character’s eventual business in the movie, the restaurant captures what made it an instant classic, and conveys the magic through scratch-made, southern-style comfort dishes, including shrimp prepared in countless ways, and award-winning ribs.
If your mouth is already watering, we’ve got excellent news: soon you’ll be able to run, Forrest, run, and try for yourself! Thirty years after the original Cannery Row location, Australia’s first-ever Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. will open its doors, this year in none other than Brisbane.
As with all their locations, you can expect the venue to be meticulously themed, with film details that make a meal into a fully immersive experience, such as the Jenny boat, ping pong tables, memorabilia and still-photos from the movie, reproductions of script pages, storyboards, merch, and even some costumes! Plus, if you’re a Forrest fan, you can test your knowledge with some Forrest Gump trivia.
Although menus may vary by location, it’s a safe bet that they’ll be serving up high-quality seafood — especially shrimp — and playful drinks, like their unforgettable hand-shaken margaritas! The Brisbane menu will most likely have an Aussie twist to it and, we, for one, can’t wait to see what they’ve got up their sleeve!
So far, we know the new restaurant will be located in Sandgate, but the exact opening date is still to be announced. In the meantime, we’ll shrimply be rewatching Forrest Gump in preparation for a deliciously nostalgic meal!
