From Broadway to Brisbane, the hit musical has taken its time to arrive.
Wait no more, Brisbane (actually, just a little more).
After a year-long delay, the Broadway musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which tore up stages in both Sydney and Melbourne in 2019, is finally making its way to Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in September.
Roald Dahl’s beloved and fantastically sweet tale comes to life on stage and like the original novel and subsequent 1971 Gene Wilder film, the musical has been a smashing success with reviews calling it ”gobsmackingly good” (Sydney Arts Guide) and ”deliciously funny” (Limelight Magazine).
While new songs have been added to the musical score thanks to Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner Marc Shaiman as well as Grammy and Tony Award winner Scott Wittman, the musical retains some of our most cherished songs from the film. These include “Pure Imagination”, “The Candy Man” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket”, which will certainly enthral audiences.
The marvelous and mysterious chocolate factory will be immense on stage thanks to the incredible production and set design featuring more than 2million LED lights used for special effects, amazing costumes and, of course, the Oompa-Loompas.
Directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien with choreography by Tony Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Joshua Bergasse, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory promises to be a joyride for young and old alike.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory begins its run of shows on Thursday 2 September and will close on Sunday 19 September.
