Founded in 1990, Clean Up Australia is celebrating 35 years of bringing Aussies together to improve and take action in their local environment. Since its inception, over 22 million people have volunteered within their community, and it shows no signs of stopping. Last year, volunteers collected an estimated 140,000 bags of litter nationally, and with natural disasters on the rise, the need for environmental action is clearer than ever.
As Pip Kiernan, Chair of Clean Up Australia puts it, “I truly hope that in 2025 we can rally as many Aussies as possible to get behind Clean Up Australia and make it the biggest year of action to date. Nothing makes us prouder than to see communities from all walks of life and generations coming together with a common goal of making a difference for our precious environment.”
Clean up actions have proven to make a huge difference as the FY23 Clean Up Australia Litter Report, which provides an annual overview of litter collected by volunteers each calendar year, highlighted. The findings show that plastics made up 81% of all surveyed litter and, crucially, that most of the litter was cleared from waterway sites.
If you’re eager to get your hands dirty — metaphorically, as you’ll be wearing gloves —you can register for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 2, here! You can even register your business (on February 25) or school (on February 28) to participate in the cause, so you can make a difference in your community, with your community.
