We have bittersweet news. First, the bad news: Beetlejuice the Musical is calling curtains early on its Australian run.
The difficult decision was made due to increasing cost pressures and the logistical challenges of doing a national tour. The show had been planned to continue until August in Brisbane, but will now be cut short, and all performances in Sydney, Perth and Adelaide have been cancelled.
However, if you haven’t caught the show yet, you still have a chance! Beetlejuice will be haunting QPAC until July 5.
Of course, an abrupt cancellation like this highlights the need for strong protections for creatives, and a Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) said the union will be actively pursuing all entitlements owed to affected members.
Now, on to the good news! The show replacing Beetlejuice The Musical is a ageless classic that’s bloody brilliat! We’re talking about Dracula: Ballet, a gothic spectacular that originally debuted at QPAC last year, to rave reviews and sold-out shows.
This reimagining of Bram Stoker’s masterpiece, choreographed by Joel Burke and featuring a powerful score led by Emmy Award-winning composer Jason Fernandez, features some of the most iconic pieces of music by Claude Debussy, Franz Liszt, Camille Saint-Saëns and Modest Mussorgsky.
After the successful Australian run, the production toured across major venues including Sadler’s Wells and the London Palladium in London, Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre, San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre and Singapore’s Esplanade Theatre, so if you missed it the first time, you’ll really want to take a bite of it this time!
