Keeping the Ekka spirit alive one car at a time.
There was a collective sigh of disappointment the other week when we went into lockdown and we heard that Ekka was going to be cancelled for the second year in a row. Safety comes first and Queensland’s largest annual event, which welcomes an average of 400,000 visitors each August, had to be called off.
Queenslanders, though, have come out and shown their overwhelming support for the community as well as hundreds (maybe thousands) of messages asking for Ekka’s wildly popular drive-thru to make a return. Sometimes those petitions fall on deaf ears but not this time and from Saturday 14 August, our favourite Ekka treats will be available.
The drive-thru will be double the size of last year’s and will also run for nine days, open from 10am to 7pm. In other words, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to get your hands on as many strawberry sundaes, Dagwood dogs and Bertie Beetle showbags as you can manage.
For those on foot, Ekka is also putting together a pop-up on King Street so you can walk right up (social distancing in mind) and walk away with a tub of strawberry ice cream.
The Ekka drive-thru opens on Saturday 14 August and will run through until Sunday 22 August at the Brisbane Showgrounds (entry via Gate 4A on O’Connell Terrace) with the King Street pop-up at 5/45 King Street, Bowen Hills.
Keep the Ekka spirit alive and get yourself a strawberry sundae.
