You have heard us say that the food scene in Brisbane is unparalleled, and we stand by that. However, one thing we’ve been missing is an iconic Haigh’s Chocolate venue… until now!
The chocolatier has announced it will be debuting in our city with not just one, but three stores this year. The decision comes thanks to Queenslanders’ accounting for almost 20% of online sales: talk about a sweet tooth!
To keep up with demand, the company recently opened a new production and warehouse facility in South Australia, and it’s a good thing they did! Haigh’s now expects to increase their chocolate production from 1,100 tonnes to 2,000 per year — all those chocaholic Brisbanites to feed — and will create 75 jobs in Brisbane for the three shops, with recruitment starting soon. So keep an eye out if you’ve got some Willy Wonka in you!
The first store is set to open in August at Westfield Mt Gravatt and, later in the year, it will be Chermside and Carindale’s turn, bringing Haigh’s total number of stores to a whopping 26 across the nation.
The Adelaide-born family company was founded over a century ago, in 1915, and has steadily built up a loyal following, thanks to their handcrafted and ethically sourced chocolates, not to mention their hand in Aussie chocolate history.
In fact, only 2 years after starting the chocolate business, Alfred Ernest Haigh came up with the idea of sandwiching dried fruits together and covering them in chocolate. These Original Fruit Chocolates have been recognised as a South Australian state Heritage Icon since 2002. Nowadays, you can even tour the OG factory in SA!
