Back in 2024, HBO announced its streaming platform, Max would soon launch in Australia, and the wait is almost over because on Monday, March 31 you’ll be able to subscribe to the new streaming to watch
This comes at exactly the right time for the second season of The Last of Us to premiere on it, and will bring other smash hits like House of the Dragon, and highly-anticipated shows and seasons like Welcome to Derry and the newest Euphoria with it.
What does this mean for other services?
Currently, most of the shows that air on HBO in the US are available on Aussie streamers such as Binge and Foxtel. Unfortunately, for the former this does mean that Binge users will lose access to HBO shows once Max launches in Australia. With Foxtel, however, subscribers will get access to a Max Basic plan — meaning with ads — for free with their existing subscription.
Alternatively, of course, you may choose to forgo those services and subscribe directly to Max, although specific details, such as other plans available and their pricing, are yet to be announced.
One thing is clear: HBO Max is bringing its A game, thanks to parent company Warner Bros Discovery’s wide range of brands, such as Warner Bros — which includes some of the biggest blockbuster movies of the past few years — the DC Universe, Harry Potter, Cartoon Network, Discovery, HGTV, and many others. Not to mention the variety of prestige series — think True Detective, Succession and The Sopranos — that you’ll be able to binge.
Stay tuned for more news as the launch date nears, and start blocking off you evenings so you can finally get around to watching that one show your co-worker keeps recommending.
