Matsuri Brisbane, the biggest Japanese festival in Brissy is coming back for another year! And this promises to be a very special edition of the event, as 2026 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia.
Highlighting the strong bond and cultural exchange between Japan and Australia that has developed over the past 50 years, Matsuri Brisbane features traditional and modern live music, mouth-watering street food, thrilling performances, and fascinating cultural experiences! It’s the perfect chance to connect with the community, make new friends, and experience the beauty, culture, and spirit of Japan.
Given its success in past years, the festival is expecting as many as 30,000 visitors, all eager to experience the exciting lineup of events and activities that will take place. If you’re feeling musical, you can’t miss the Japanese drums, and Japanese traditional dances such as Awaodori, Yosakoi, and Bon Odori. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a musical event without J-Pop bands and Idols ready to wow audiences with their precise vocals and stunning choreography!

If you’re looking to truly immerse yourself in Japanese traditional culture, the workshops and demonstrations are where it’s at: from Ikebana (flower arrangement), calligraphy, tea ceremony amd even martial arts demonstrations such as Aikido, Karate, swordsmanship, and more, you’ll come away with a better understanding of the country’s traditions.
When you need a little pick-me-up, swing by the stalls selling a variety of tasty food and drinks, and browse for other goodies such as Japanese crafts, books, handmade accessories, and even tourism information if you’re craving the real deal.
There is also plenty for the kids to do with traditional Japanese toys such as Kendama and Koma for them to experience, not to mention water balloons up for grabs!
