While we love our summery Christmases Down Under, there’s no denying that snowy, twinkling European markets have a certain charm to them, and none more so than Scandinavian markets. There’s nothing better than strolling along a winter wonderland, surrounded by inviting lights and the smell of sweet treats, holding a hot drink to warm your hands.
Now that we’ve painted a picture, you may be pulling your passport out and looking up flights on your phone — or your laptop, if you’re a Millennial or older — but don’t worry: as delightful as a trip to Sweden or Norway would be, you don’t have to hop on a plane to experience some of their festive magic!

This Saturday, November 29, Brisbane’s annual Twilight Scandinavian Christmas Markets is bringing the best of the Nordic countries to our tropical shores, for a truly unique Chrissy experience. Organised by Brisbane’s Scandinavian community, this is a prime opportunity to learn about and participate in some of their seasonal customs — or to feel at home if you’re Scandi yourself!
Join in on the fun for an evening of handmade crafts and unique gifts, courtesy of around 20 welcoming artisans and stallholders, who will showcase the best of Scandinavian design, heritage and cuisine. You can get your Christmas shopping started or snag some fabulous decorations for your Christmas tree, enjoy mouth-watering Scandinavian food, drinks — did somebody say glögg (mulled wine) or Julmust? — and comforting baked goods, or simply bask in the cosy Christmas atmosphere, complete with live music and entertainment that’ll have everyone’s heart growing three sizes.
