The Sunshine Coast has been hiding a fairytale castle this entire time! First built by Scottish couple Ian and Marcia Hayne, Bli Bli Castle — recently renamed to Sunshine Castle — has been standing watch since 1972. Originally built to house eight original fairytale diaramas and some dolls, the stately building has shifted focus over the last decade to serving as a museum and events venue.
Although it’s undergone multiple renovations over the years, as well as changes in ownership, some things remain: its imposing yet beautiful façade, and the fascinating Doll Museum, which includes a couple of the fairytale dioramas, and dancing dolls in national costumes.
As time went by, more and more medieval displays were added. In 2013, to celebrate the Castle’s 40th anniversary, a History Shields Tour was launched. And, although sections of the Doll Museum have been converted into interactive armour displays, most of the Museum has been preserved, as an important part of the Castle heritage.
At its peak, the Castle was home to over 2,500 dolls, but their maintenance and preservation proved challenging; the structure had not been built with this kind of endeavour in mind, so some sections of the museum suffered weather damage.
Still, in 2020, talented local artist Khatti von Leigh, who had previously designed and painted murals on the terrace, was tasked with bringing the space back to life. These days, the new Doll Museum looks as good as ever, drawing visitors in with its eerie, yet charming, vibe.
The fairytale aspect was also recovered: In the late 80’s a local Sunshine Coast artist was commissioned to build a new display of fairytale dioramas. Now known as The Fairytale Walk, it’s still a highlight on the castle tour today and allows young and old alike to delve into an imaginary world.
With so much to see, a self-guided tour might be the way to go, although if you’re looking to see the sights in a more whimsical way, The Treasure Hunt is where it’s at!
In addition to all the interesting nooks and crannies, the castle has a café with food and drinks fit for a king, so you can refuel after running around the Castle. And, on your way out, you can get the little ones a souvenir to remember at their onsite toy shop!
Practical information
Sunshine Castle is open Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and on Sundays from 10am to 3pm.
Occasional early closures and other changes to opening hours are usually announced on their Facebook.
