The coldest town in our state has just been crowned Queensland’s Top Tourism Town for 2026 at the Queensland Tourism Industry Council’s Top Tourism Town Awards. Stanthorpe was recently recognised for its “outstanding visitor experiences, community spirit and tourism offering.” And it’s no wonder! This cosy town, heart of the Granite Belt wine region, has plenty to offer, and its excellent food, crackling fireplaces and unique activities make it the perfect winter escape!
You’ll know you’re in Stanthorpe as soon as you see their Big Apple, welcoming you to the town and giving you a glimpse of one of their major food offerings. That’s not even their only big thing! Next to the Visitor Centre, you’ll find a huge thermometer, indicating if there’s a chance Stanthorpe might get a dusting of snow!
Whether it snows or not, this chilly town boasts plenty of other frosty activities, starting with mouth-watering cheeses at Stanthorpe Cheese, Queensland highest, and therefore coldest, cheese shop. Gorge on their cheeses, preserves, and regional goodies, or sit down for a full meal at Jersey Girls Café.
If you’re feeling fancy, you’ll be happy to learn that Stanthorpe is home to the rare French Black Perigord truffle, one of the most prized varieties of this delicacy. You can take a guided tour throught the Truffle Discovery Centre and, of course, sample this aromatic goody and stock up on products made with it on your way out. You can also go to The Folly Truffles for a more rural experience, and their tour and lunch is as tasty as it is scenic.
We would be remiss not to mention Stanthorpe’s other big draw: wine. You might think you know wine, but do the words fiano, saperavi or morvedre ring a bell? These are what’s know as the region’s ‘Strange Bird’ wines, made from alternative grape varieties, and harder to find outside the Granite Belt that your average bottle. With over 50 wineries and vineyards scattered all over the area, you can spend a whole day wine hopping!
Nature lovers will also find plenty to do with nearby Girraween National Park ready to blow minds with its balancing boulders, jaw-dropping views and, of course, region-defining granite peaks!
