Toowoomba’s history just got that much more colourful! A whopping 1,564 people turned up to Queens Park to break the world record for most people dressed as violets for Floral Friday, marking the spectacular opening of the 2026 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.
The prevous record was set by 938 people dressed as sunflowers in Malta. Now, Toowoomba has surpassed that number, all while celebrating the flower that has been part of the city’s identity for almost a century.
As Toowoomba Regional Council Tourism portfolio spokesperson Cr James O’Shea said, the achievement was a proud moment for the city: “Today is a fantastic moment for Toowoomba. To see more than xx people come together, dressed as our very own Toowoomba Violet, is something the whole community can be incredibly proud of.
“The Toowoomba Violet has such a special place in our city’s history, so it’s fitting that we’ve celebrated it by bringing our community together and making a little history of our own.
“To start the 2026 Carnival by breaking a world record is a pretty spectacular way to celebrate what makes Toowoomba special – our gardens, our people and our community spirit.”

The Toowoomba Violet has a special place in the city’s history: the Viola odorata, nicknamed the ‘Sweet Violet’, became known as the Toowoomba Violet after local mothers and families sold bunches of the flowers following World War I to help raise funds for the Mothers’ Memorial, honouring their fallen sons. It was formally declared Toowoomba’s floral emblem in 1932.
This marks the start of the 2026 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, running from September 18 to October 5, featuring more than 80 events and experiences across the Garden City, including the Grand Central Floral Parade on Saturday, September 19, the Paw Parade on Sunday, October 4, and much more.
