Despite our relatively small size, there are countless things to do in Brisbane and, more and more, our city is stepping into the spotlight. And while there are heaps of unforgettable experiences to be had, some of them stand out for being truly special, small moments that capture the essence of the city in a simple, memorable way.
As part of Secret Media Network’s Global List of the Best Micro Experiences of 2026, we have curated the following micro experiences in Brisbane that we believe could not happen anywhere else in the world. These form part of a global list, which will include standout experiences from cities across our worldwide network, so you can feel like a local no matter where you go.
Spotting bin chickens

Whether the real, feathered creatures or their metal counterparts first come to mind, it wouldn’t be Brisbane without white ibises — affectionately known as bin chickens!
Sure, the live ones may get annoying, but they are so iconic that artist Sethius Art has made around 40 “Binnies”, which are dotted around Brisbane and the suburbs, reminding us of the sense of humour and love of nature that make our city special.
You can find a map with all Binnies on the Bin Chicken Trail here.
Roll strawberries down the hills of South Bank Parklands for the water dragons
Also part of the local fauna, water dragons — easily spotted in Roma Street Parklands, the City Botanic Gardens, and Mt Coot Tha — tend to keep to themselves… unless you have a tasty snack that is!
The grassy slope going down towards the water all along South Bank Parklands presents the perfect opportunity to roll down one or two strawberries (you wouldn’t want to overfeed them) and watch them come out of their sun-drenched stupor to get a taste!
Although they are omnivores, it is important not to feed them anything harmful, such as junk food, and stick to native fruits. Be cautious and respectful, as water dragons can be territorial, and have a powerful bite.
Go uphill in Toowong Cemetery’s Spook Hill
Toowong Cemetery is famous — or infamous? — for it’s creepy ghost tours, but what if we told you you can experience a seemingly supernatural phenomenon yourself? If you park your car in a specific spot and put it on neutral, legend has it it’ll start rolling… uphill.
So why does this place defy the laws of physics? One tale tells of two young sisters who were killed in a car accident in the area, whose graves are on top of Spook Hill, and who drag cars uphill so that they will meet the same tragic fate.
For the less spooky, though no less fascinating explanation, this is what is known as a gravity hill, or magnetic hill. The scientific reason is that the layout of the surrounding land, especially an obstructed horizon, produces an illusion, making a slight downhill slope appear to be an uphill slope.
Whatever the case, it’s something you have to see to believe!
