The official vision for Brisbane’s 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the guiding principles that will be the underpinning of the event, has been revealed: Believe, Belong, Become.
The vision was arrived at through the input of more than 6,000 Australians who shared their thoughts on this monumental sporting event, and was unveiled at a launch event in Brisbane on Wednesday, December 3.
The vision’s three ideas express three core principles at the centre of what the Games aim for: “Believe” highlights the power of sport and of the Australian spirit, “Belong” represents Brisbane’s welcoming atmosphere, and “Become” signals our opportunity as a city, state and country to be better and grow stronger through this important event.
Having been approved by the International Olympic Committee, this vision seeks to encourage more participation in sports, showcase everything that makes our country special and honour our heritage, ensure accessibility for all and reinforce inclusivity and respect.
Brisbane 2032 CEO Cindy Hook explained what the Games’ six commitments will be:
- To commit to getting more active in sport, and using the Games to inspire more people to get into sport
- To roll out the welcome mat and show the warmth of Australia
- To make access easy for everyone at the Games
- To embrace the natural environment and share it with the world
- To seize the economic opportunity posed by the Games
- To celebrate Australia’s rich history and multicultural society
As Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris said, “As we talk about Believe, Belong, Become Brisbane 2032, we’ll bring to life our communities and bring to life what we’ll stand for.
“Visions are a north star. They speak to direction, they speak to aspiration, they speak to inspiration. They’re meant to excite and ignite all the things we will stand for as we move forward in designing our Games.”
The vision is not the Olympics’ tagline, which will come further down the line, probably a few years before the Games take place. Previous Summer Olympics taglines have included:
- “Games Wide Open” (Paris, 2024)
- “United by Emotion” (Tokyo, 2020)
- “A new world” (Rio, 2016)
- “Inspire a generation” (London, 2012)
- “One world. One dream” (Beijing, 2008)
- “Welcome home” (Athens, 2004)
- “Share the spirit” (Sydney, 2000)
