If you’re looking for a sup-Serb way to spend Father’s Day, the annual Brisbane Serbian Festival has it all: culture, tradition, dance, delicious food and more!
On Sunday, September 7, the ultimate Eastern European celebration will take place in Dutton Park in a whirlwind of colour and culture that’ll make the dances that much more lively and the food that much tastier! The ever-active Serbian Orthodox community of Woolloongabba puts together this not-for-profit event that the whole family can enjoy, and there’s truly something for everyone!
Could a festival even be considered one if it didn’t have outstanding music and dancing? Luckily, you don’t have to wonder at the Serbian Festival, because one of its main draws is the animated live tunes that will get everyone’s feet tapping, and hopefully even on the dancefloor for the Kolo, that famous circle dance — considered Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO — where everyone joins hands and lets themselves surrender to the rhythm!
Once you’re all danced out, or if you have two left feet, you can also just watch the professionals do it! Queensland’s largest Serbian folklore ensemble, Morava Brisbane, will be in attendance with their colourful costumes and lively music, ready to show off Serbia’s moving traditional dances to the audience in an unmissable performance!

If all this grooving has your stomach rumbling, you’re in the right place! All your Serbian favourites — or soon-to-be-favourites if you’re new to their food — will be waiting for you! From mouth-watering meats to traditional sweets and palačinke (crêpes) for all you sweet tooths out there, you’ll get your fill and then some! As for drinks, how does a Jelen beer or a throat-warming Rakija brandy sound?
Those with a big appetite might still not be satisfied, in which case, you’ve heard of a hot dog eating contest, now get ready for the man vs ćevap (sausage) challenge! This is exactly what is sounds like: try to get as many ćevapi down as you can in the allotted time!
Itching to learn more about Serbian culture? You will also be able to participate in Serbian language workshops, take in art exhibits and browse stalls from local makers! Plus, there will be a kids zone for the little ones with games, crafts, and rides.
