While it’s true that we love Brissy in the winter, you may feel the need to get away from it all, and spend a few cosy days out in nature, making the most of the milder weather. The first places to come to mind might be one of our beautiful beaches, and we don’t blame you! If, however, you’re looking for a less crowded alternative, we’ve got the places for you!
The swimming holes
We’re talking about none other than Flanagan’s Reserve in the Scenic Rim, a serene oasis whose camping grounds stretch across 28 lush acres of forest, with a crystalline river that flows into an idyllic swimming hole.
On its journey to the deeper pool, the river has a shallow section where younger ones can swim more safely, and the campgrounds are dog friendly, so the whole family can enjoy! The riverbed is also grassy and spacious: the perfect spot to lounge as you get dry or even have a picnic. Those who prefer a more active getaway can even fish for carp, bass and fresh water mullet in the river.
If you’ve still got some energy left over after all these water activities, Flanagan’s Reserve Camping is very close to Mt Maroon, which is a part of the stunning Mt Barney National Park. Drive a short distance to the starting points, and hike an easy 7.4-kilometre round trip among imposing eucalypts and brush box trees, and you’ll reach Lower Portals, where a beautiful, deep blue pool awaits to freshen up after your walk.
How to get there
You can reach Flanagan’s Reserve via National Route 13 or Mount Lindesay Hwy, and they both take about an hour and 40 minutes; the former has tolls. Or, you can drive directly to Mt Barney, which will take 5 more minutes.
