Bringing together surfers, filmmakers, photographers and ocean lovers, the Gold Coast’s very own Flotsam Festival is returning for the fourth year in a row, running for two weeks, from May 1 to May 14.
Staged like a giant interactive arts trail, the Festival at once pays homage to and is inspired by the Gold Coast’s world-class surf breaks and iconic coastline through a maelstrom of short films, workshops, in-depth discussions with filmmakers and photographers, live music, and photo exhibitions.
Flotsam’s innovative outdoor photography showcases, which make the backdrop a part of the experience, as well as curated film nights and a youth film and photography initiative, partnering visuals with live performances by up-and-coming musicians, will be returning in this year’s edition, plus other surprises.
If you’re an aspiring photographer, there is also a Found Objects Photo Contest, which presents the opportunity to show off items found at local beaches or waterways, arranged in a creative and artistic way, and serving the dual purpose of artistic expression and aiding local clean-up efforts. Contestants are encouraged to share a story about the photograph, which can include activities, memories or a few words about what you — and your community — are doing to protect your environment. To submit an entry, you can simply post the photo to Instagram, write a caption, and tag @flotsam.festival and @surfrideraus, using the hashtag #SurfriderAusFound. You can check out the full details — and prizes up for grabs! — here.
Highlighting the importance of supporting and uplifting local talent, and raising awareness about ocean conservation, Festival Director, Carolyn Emge said, “Flotsam will again welcome some of the world’s foremost photographic talent while shining a light on our homegrown creatives. We can’t wait unveil a program of events that invite visitors to experience Gold Coast’s surf culture through a creative lens – from pop up live film and music experiments, dedicated amateur and advanced photography workshops, through to ocean conservation art initiatives.”
Festival attendees can expect a diverse array of free or low-cost activities when the festival rolls up the coastline, splashing Coolangatta, Kirra and Tugun awash with events before activating precincts in Currumbin, Palm Beach and Burleigh.
The program and tickets will be released soon, so keep an eye on their website to be first in line!
