From July 3 to August 16, the already-gorgeous Brisbane Quarter will be home to internationally-recognised Matthew Aberline’s joyful, larger-than-life art installation. The piece, titled Love Follows a Line, is a vibrant, oversized inflatable flower garden, all about sparking moments of wonder and connection.
The large-scale work is both playful and profound, celebrating love, kindness, patience and respect, and how these societal qualities are passed from generation to generation. Think bold colour, giant blooms, and a sense of joy that’s impossible not to share!
This is Matthew Aberline’s specialty, as his large-scale immersive art experiences and community workshops foster joy and connection. He is the Director of The Beautiful & Useful Studio, an art studio that creates projects with communities and organisations, and shares their existing body of work with festivals, galleries and museums, all while advocating for diverse LGBTQI+ and First Nations stories.
In line with Wonderstruck, which is now showing at QAGOMA until October 6, Love Follows a Line is designed to bring a touch of that same magic to the heart of the city, inviting Brisbanites to slow down, reflect, share in a moment of tenderness and memory, and take some beautiful pictures.
Matthew Aberline explained, “The work is an opportunity to reflect on the love and nurturing we received as children when we were growing up, and a chance now as adults to reconnect to values of kindness and peace as we move within our own communities.”
And if you want to keep the good times and memories rolling, Brisbane Quarter has come up with creative, themed sips and bites inspired by the installation!
- Persone, Pink Flowers: a refined cocktail of Belvedere vodka, elderflower liqueur, lime, and house-made rhubarb syrup, inspired by the delicate blush of blooms.
- Brisbane Phoenix, Iceberg Asparagus: a seasonal side of premium crisp asparagus served chilled over ice, echoing the fresh, botanical theme of the installation.
- Brisbane Phoenix, Hendrick’s Blossom G&T: a show-stopping gin and tonic with a delicate cucumber ribbon floating across the glass, tinged purple and perfumed with floral notes.
- Phat Boy, Tapioca Pudding with Lychee & Coconut Ice Cream: a playful and textural dessert that celebrates tropical sweetness.
- Tenya, Cherry Blossom Peach Spritz: a refreshing, bubbly cocktail blending the subtle elegance of Japanese cherry blossom with juicy peach, perfect for a summery sip among the blooms.
The colourful installation is free entry, and it’s guaranteed to make it feel like spring in your heart!
