You’ve seen Rent. You’ve seen the award-winning film, tick, tick… BOOM! Now, see it live on stage when it comes to Brisbane this year. The autobiographical musical by Johnathan Larson, composer of Rent, is a love letter to theatre and New York City. See it with your own eyes when it comes to Brisbane’s QPAC Playhouse in March.
The production has completed its Melbourne run and will soon head up to the Sunshine State before before looping back down to Sydney in April for the last lot of shows.
tick, tick… BOOM!
This rock musical will take you back to 1990, when a promising young composer, played by Australian actor Hugh Sheridan, questions his life choices on the cusp of turning 30. Grappling with his career as an artist, and torn between fear and love, he ponders the question, “What do we do with the time we have?”
Larson was an American composer, lyricist and playwright famous for writing Rent and tick, tick… BOOM!, which explored issues of multiculturalism, substance use disorder and homophobia. Just prior to Rent’s opening night, Larson tragically passed away at age 36. He received three posthumous Tony Awards and a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Rent.
Just last year, tick, tick… BOOM! was released as a film. Directed by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, and starring Andrew Garfield, it was dubbed as one of the best films of 2021 by the American Film Institute. At the Golden Globes, it was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Garfield won an award for Best Actor.
tick, tick… BOOM! premiered Off-Broadway in 2001, and has since had a US national tour, a West End production and numerous international productions. It will take over Brisbane’s QPAC Playhouse from March 1 – 5.
