Who doesn’t love Mexican food? Between its bright colours, bold flavours and customisable spice level, its spot among the world’s best cuisines is pretty much undisputed and it may well be the world’s #1 hangover food.
We have good news for all taco-, guacamole- and churro-lovers! The geniuses behind La Bodega Taqueria, one of East Brisbane’s most beloved Mexican restaurants, have graced Fortitude Valley with another mouth-watering joint.
In line with the OG’s humble origins, the new La Bodega took over a heritage-listed 1930’s garage and battery shop on Wickham Street, giving it a charming, casual “everyone-is-welcome” atmosphere. The terracotta-coloured building immediately transports you to a warm and cheerful oasis, complete with cacti, fairy lights and ornate benches.
This may have begun as a neighbourhood taqueria but it has long-since surpassed those aspirations and if you try your luck without a rezzie, you may well find yourself taco-less. Fortunately, more space and a bigger bar at the new venue, mean higher chances of tasting their tasty menu.
With almost 120 seats, La Bodega Fortitude Valley has at least twice the capacity of the original La Bodega. The space is perfectly adapted for different types of meals, whether a quick bite at the chill bar area, or a sit-down meal alfresco with a bigger group!

The menu includes shareable starters such as bean dip, loaded fries and quesadillas, each as flavourful and delicious as the list. But tacos, evidently, are the true stars of the show, and you can’t miss out on exquisite fillings such as pork Pibil — a type of pork marinated in a Mexican citrus sauce, topped with sauce — grilled steak, snapper and, of course, the ubiquitous birria — smoked beef marinated in chilli sauce.
If you’d rather fill up on one big meal, they also have the classic burritos or bowls, and other traditonal dishes such as enchiladas. You’d be forgive if you were overwhelmed with all these yummy options so don’t worry: La Bodega has a “Feed me” menu, which will get you a little bit of the most popular dishes, to share.
To end the meal on a sweet note, you can opt for a safe — though no less tasty — option and get some churros, or venture outside the norm and try their fresh horchata ice cream!
As for drinks, no Mexican meal would be complete without margs and other tequila-based cocktails, though of course the restaurant also carries beer, mezcal, and soft drinks.
