The Lunar New Year is galloping towards us and, to celebrate the Year of the Horse, Sunnybank Plaza is going all out!
Their festival program features a heaps of cultural performances, interactive experiences, family-friendly activities and, of course, delicious Asian cuisine! Once of the highlights are the classic Lion Dances you’ve come to expect and, this year, a very special Dragon Dance believed to bring prosperity and good fortune!
If you’re a hands-on learner, drop by the Chinese Calligraphy workshop by Master Eric Lin, or marvel at demonstrations like Silk Embroidery, Tai Chi, and live performances by the AusOriental Orchestra and Queensland Chinese Orchestra.
Got little ones with you? No problem! There will be plenty for the whole family to do, like a traditional painting studio with lantern, mask and fan painting workshops for kids that will bring out their creativity and let their imaginations fly. Or learn balloon twisting and lucky charm bracelet marking from the experts. Whatever you choose, you’ll have a fun souvenir to take home as a memento of a magical start to the Year of the Horse!

As for food, you’ll be spoiled for choice with more than 70 authentic Asian dine-in and takeaway venues, where food lovers can savour traditional flavours and, for $68pp, you can book a Sunnybank Food Discovery Tour, and go on a guided journey through all the festival’s most beloved dishes.
Festival attendees will also have the chance to enter the returning EVA Air “Win a Holiday for Two” competition, with a prize pool valued at over $8,000, including return flights to Asia, accommodation from All Way Travel, spending money and a double-pass to the Sunnybank Food Discovery Tour! All you have to do for a chance to win is scan the QR code while visiting Sunnybank Plaza or Sunny Park and complete your details online.
These festivities all will culminate in Sunnybank’s now-iconic rooftop party on Saturday, February 28! This year, they are truly going all out with an unde-neigh-bly stunning Lunar New Year drone display — Brisbane’s first ever! — that will see 200 drones take to the sky just after 7pm in a choreographed aerial performance, followed by Brisbane’s largest and most beloved Lunar New Year fireworks at 8pm in partnership with Skylighter. The event will also include live entertainment, lion and dragon performances, and family-friendly activities throughout the evening.
