Unsurprisingly, the Sunshine Coast hinterland is a popular day trip and weekend getaway location for Brisbanites. What, with its charming country towns, waterfalls, hiking trails, and well, some of the best doughnuts in the area. If you’re looking to escape the city, reconnect with nature, and satisfy your sweet tooth, then you’re in luck. Time to pack the car and head up north.
Country bakery visits
Just under 2 hours from Brisbane, you’ll find Kenilworth Bakery, tucked away in the lush Upper Mary Valley. Once you walk through the door to the bakery, prepare to be overwhelmed by the doughnut choices. P.s: we won’t judge if you end up buying a whole box.
And while the drool-worthy doughnuts are a hit amongst locals and day-trippers, it’s their coffee served inside a doughnut and 1KG doughnut challenge that has people flocking to town. Yep, you read that right: fresh barista coffee poured inside a sugary doughnut, which you can sip on and then eat afterwards. You might be thinking: wouldn’t the whole thing get all soggy? No, it doesn’t, because the inside of the doughnut is lined with chocolate spread, keeping the coffee from soaking into the dough. Smart idea, delicious idea. Also an Australian-first.
If you’re feeling up to the challenge, you can pre-order a 1KG doughnut. And if you can eat it in one sitting, you’ll get your money back as well as a personalised signed plate that will get hung up on the bakery wall.
Now that you’ve filled up on coffee and baked goods, it’s time to hit up a waterfall. Or you can go beforehand and bakery afterwards. Totally up to you. Nestled in the rainforest, Kondalilla Falls is a popular spot among visitors and boasts dramatic views, especially after rain. The main circuit trail is 4.7km and takes around 1.5 – 2 hours.
Or, if you have a 4WD and are feeling extra adventurous, Boolumba Falls is a lush spot tucked away in Conondale National Park. Here you’ll find stunning cascades and rock pools.
If you’d like to make a weekend or few-day getaway out of your time in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, we recommend booking a stay at Kanimbia Luxury Glamping, a true jewel of the South East. Not to mention being awarded 2021 Finalist for Most Unique Stay in the Australian Airbnb Host Awards.
