After launching last year in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, Queenslanders will now be able to join the no-waste movement by joining Too Goo To Go’s over 600,000 users.
The free mobile app connects business and consumers so they can unite against food waste. This staggering issue is more important than ever, with more than 7.6 million tonnes of food discarded in Australia annually, of which 70% is still edible.
With the goal to help halve the country’s food waste by 2030, Too Good To Go partners and users have saved more than 400,000 meals from going to the bin since August! This translates to over a million kilos of CO2e emissions avoided from entering earth’s atmosphere, a significant reduction of land being used unnecessarily for food production and avoiding over 324,000,000 litres of water waste.
With more than 1,300 partners across Australia, Too Good To Go’s Queensland debut has been long-awaited, and with our state’s preference for fresh food, there is no doubt that there is room for saving food — and money.
A variety of local favourites have already signed on, including Banneton Bakery, Happy Dough, Pressi,
Shibusawa Bakery and national brands like Bakers Delight, FoodCo’s Muffin Break and Jamaica Blue, Sushi Sushi, Roll’d, and more, all at a significantly reduced price.
So how does it work? It’s simple: the app uses your location to show you nearby stores with available surplus food. You can then browse for one of your regulars or find a new spot, reserve and pay for a Surprise Bag, which you can then pick up at the store.
It’s easy to see how this space creates a win-win-win situation for businesses, food lovers and, most importantly, the world! Food businesses can recover costs on food that would otherwise be wasted, you can enjoy high-quality food and treats at great prices and, of course, it’s a more sustainable model and contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
So get to saving the planet and your wallet, and get yourself a little surprise in the process!
